Music was a key part of a whaler’s life. Some of their songs were for working. For example, shanties helped sailors to pull their oars in concert. Others helped make meaning of the monotony, the danger, and the promethean triumph of hunting such fearsome creatures. Thankfully, many of those songs were written down, and they now stand as additional firsthand accounts of a typical whaler’s life. Michigan-I-O will give us a special virtual performance of some of these treasured tunes!
