This Newbery Award book follows Pong\, born in Namwon Prison\, who escapes to find that freedom is just as elusive outside\, where the wealthy bask in light while the poor remain in darkness. Hunted by Nok\, the warden’s determined daughter\, Pong discovers harsh truths about justice and power in the Thai-inspired city of Chattana. This fast-paced adventure reimagines Les Misérables.
