SUMMARY:Herrick Library Art Project (series #1)
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of four Tuesdays in October\, come and participate in the North Branch Art Project! This project will use Change Sings and New Kid to see how art can be used to explore themes like empathy\, growth\, change\, and community. Young artists will work with local art educators and library staff to develop both individual and group projects. A final\, collaborative art piece will be unveiled on November 7 at a special celebration and will be displayed at the North Branch Library. Registration required at herrickdl.org/events starting Sept. 19. Artists are required to attend the majority of sessions and complete project assignments. Space is limited. Funding for the series is made possible in part by a grant from the Michigan Humanities\, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Arts.

DESCRIPTION:We’ll explore the complex relationships and settings of Madeline Miller’s Circe\, using natural items and dyed wool yarn to weave parts of the heroine’s epic story. From the opulent halls of her youth to the windswept heights and beaches of secluded Aiaia\, Circe’s journey is peppered with visually stunning settings\, and the terrain\, forests\, ocean depths\, and meadows directly impact her ability to grow inwardly and to transform the world around her through witchcraft\, wit\, and willpower. We’ll create abstract woven wall hangings that represent one of these landscapes\, while thinking about the settings that have been most influential in our own life’s journey. We’ll also collaborate on a larger yarn and wood piece in which we’ll map out significant relationships in Circe’s life\, with gods\, demi-gods\, fellow nymphs\, and humans.
