SUMMARY:HUM10 – Gatsby's Unimagined Future: Big Read 2024
DESCRIPTION:F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1924 novel\, The Great Gatsby\, remains one of the handful of enduring candidates for the designation “Great American Novel.” For all how Gatsby seems to herald a new\, modern world\, the novel revolves around its main character’s inability to imagine a future that is not a return to the past. In this course\, Michael Van Dyke will consider how Gatsby compels us to reflect on how we\, as individuals and as a nation\, limit our ability to actively shape the future by clinging to romanticized versions of the past.\nMichael Van Dyke received a PhD from Michigan State University and taught at several universities before joining the Hope College faculty last year as a visiting associate professor of English. His areas of scholarly interest are 20th-century American literature\, film studies\, and the intersection of faith and the arts.\n\nThis event is NOT open to the public.

SUMMARY:Friday Movie Matinee
DESCRIPTION:Stop in for a free matinee showing! Feel free to bring snacks and drinks to enjoy during the film. Registering for one event in the Friday Matinee series registers you for the entire month\, so you don’t miss out! \nThis month\, we’re featuring two different versions of “The Great Gatsby” in partnership with Big Read Lakeshore. If you enjoyed those films\, feel free to attend our book club discussion on “The Great Gatsby” and “American Born Chinese” on Wednesday\, November 13 at 6:30 pm. \nFriday\, November 1: The Great Gatsby (1974) \nFriday\, November 8: The Great Gatsby (2013) \n“The Great Gatsby follows viable writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922. Chasing his own American dream\, Nick lands next door to Jay Gatsby\, and across the bay from his cousin\, Daisy\, and her husband\, Tom Buchanan. Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the rich and their loves and deceits. As he bears witness\, he pens a tale of impossible love\, incorruptible dreams\, and tragedy\, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.” \nFriday\, November 15: Are You There\, God? It’s Me\, Margaret “For over fifty years\, Judy Blume’s classic has connected with readers through its relatable story\, achingly funny details\, and candid exploration of life’s biggest questions. In Lionsgate’s big-screen adaptation\, eleven-year-old Margaret is uprooted from her life in New York City for the suburbs of New Jersey\, going through the messy and tumultuous throes of puberty with new friends in a new school. She relies on her mother\, Barbara\, who is also struggling to adjust to life outside the big city\, and her adoring grandmother\, Sylvia\, who isn’t happy they moved away and likes to remind them every chance she gets.” \nFriday\, November 22: Champions “A former minor-league basketball coach is ordered by the court to manage a team of players with intellectual disabilities. He soon realizes that despite his doubts\, together\, this team can go further than they ever imagined.” \nFriday\, November 29: Library CLOSED

SUMMARY:Anne Curzan lecture: "Using Words Wisely"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture from the University of Michigan’s Anne Curzan inspired by this year’s Big Read books and lectures. \nDoes “irregardless” make you cringe? Do you worry that no one knows how to use the apostrophe anymore? If so\, this lively session on language is for you. From her perspective as a historian of the English language\, linguist\, and veteran English professor\, Anne Curzan explains changes happening in spoken and written English and whether we need to worry. Curzan shares how she handles specific usage questions–including “who vs. whom\,” “less vs. fewer\,” “based on vs. based off\,” and the perennial favorite “between you and I”–as a former member of the American Heritage Dictionary Usage Panel\, a teacher of writing\, and a copy editor. You’ll leave with a heightened awareness of changes afoot in the English language and tools for becoming an even more skilled speaker and writer.
