SUMMARY:Kick-Off Event with Dr. Fred Johnson III: Swimming Through the Gray
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Johnson will discuss the 19th century historical context of the 2020 book selection\, In the Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick. His talk\, “Swimming Through the Gray” will explore issues surrounding our nation’s historical stories and events. He’ll discuss those who’ve traditionally told history\, those who are currently telling history\, and those whose histories have been left out or silenced. This will be Dr. Johnson’s third kickoff address for our program. Our Lakeshore readers have loved learning from him over the years! \n“We’re thrilled to have Dr. Johnson participate in our program in this way. We want to use our Big Read book as a catalyst for exploring these important and timely issues. Through our November events and book discussions\, we hope to bring more awareness to these issues and want to encourage our readers to think about and respond to them from a racial equity lens.” Dr. Deborah Van Duinen\, Director of the NEA Big Read Lakeshore\, said. \n

SUMMARY:Michigan I-O Big Read/Little Read concert
DESCRIPTION:Music was a key part of a whaler’s life. Some of their songs were for working. For example\, shanties helped sailors to pull their oars in concert. Others helped make meaning of the monotony\, the danger\, and the promethean triumph of hunting such fearsome creatures. Thankfully\, many of those songs were written down\,and they now stand as additional firsthand accounts of a typical whaler’s life. Michigan-I-O will give us a special virtual performance of some of these treasured tunes!

SUMMARY:Books as Windows and Mirrors: The Importance of Reading Diverse Books
DESCRIPTION:In 1990 Rudine Bishop said “Books are sometimes windows\, offering views of worlds that may be real or imagined\, familiar or strange. These windows are also sliding glass doors\, and readers have only to walk through in imagination to become part of whatever world has been created and recreated by the author. When lighting conditions are just right\, however\, a window can also be a mirror. Literature transforms human experience and reflects it back to us\, and in that reflection we can see our own lives and experiences as part of the larger human experience.”. At this interactive zoom event\, you’ll get a chance to hear from a panel of community literature experts as they reflect on the diverse middle grade and young adult books they love and encourage others to read. Our program is delighted to have Dr. Regan Postma-Montano (Hope College Spanish and English professor)\, Dr. Jesus Montano (Hope English professor)\, Alex Zhou (Zeeland Christian Schools\, Mandarin teacher) and Becca VanWeerdhuizen (West Ottawa High School Librarian) lead this discussion. \nThis event is sponsored by Readers World.

SUMMARY:Whaling Captains of Color: America's First Meritocracy with Skip Finley
DESCRIPTION:Join Herrick District Library for an intimate conversation with Skip Finley\, author of Whaling Captains of Color: America’s First Meritocracy. Whaling was the first American industry to diversify\, and a man got to be captain not because he was white or well connected\, but because he knew how to kill a whale. Along the way he would also learn how to read and write. Working with archival records at whaling museums\, in libraries\, from private archives and studying hundreds of books and thesis\, Finley culls the best stories from the lives of over 50 Whaling Captains of Color. \nTo learn more and register visit: Herrick District Libary
